Utilizing Artificial Intelligence to Create Images of the Most Representative Individuals from Every State
In America, we all have preconceived notions about the residents of each state. New Yorkers are seen as busy and serious, Californians as laid-back yet exclusive, and Alabamians as... well, let's not go there. Stereotyping is a common practice in the U.S., whether accurate or not. Now, we can compare our biases with the images generated by A.I., specifically Midjourney's interpretations of the most stereotypical individuals in each state.
The list, originally posted by Kira Lucilfer on the r/midjourney subreddit, reveals some interesting and sometimes questionable depictions. While some states are represented fairly accurately, there are instances where the A.I. seems to rely on stereotypes of its own. For example, associating Indiana with Native American imagery due to its name origin, despite other states having larger Native American populations.
One notable portrayal is Iowa as an elderly figure wearing corn as a hat, which seems fitting. Here are the A.I.'s depictions of the most stereotypical individuals from each state, each one uniquely illustrated based on perceived characteristics.
